Preferences

User Sorting

  • Sorting Method:

  • Recommendation: "Last Name" sorting is recommended for consistency with Brightspace course lists.

  • **Alternative Option: **“First Name” sorting is not ideal for most use cases but could be used.

  • **Not Recommended: **“Username” sorting can make managing attendance less intuitive and Usernames in Brightspace are not as easily recognized as the above options.

  • Understanding the Displayed Information: When Show total absences on take attendance screen is checked a number next to each student's name will indicate their number of absences (0 for perfect attendance, 1 for one absence, etc.).

View Preferences for Records
  • View Preferences for Records can be configured according to the requirements of the course and the instructor's preference. Below are the recommended settings intended to work for most users:

  • Round grades to the nearest whole number:

  • Recommendation: Check this option to keep grading attendance simple

  • Show dropped students in record:

  • Recommendation: Uncheck this option to hide dropped students from the roster as their attendance is no longer relevant.

Grading

Session-Based Grading Column

image-20250207-201901.pngImage Added
  • Session-Based Grading Column is the most straightforward way to add attendance to your Grade Center. Once enabled, you must choose whether to grade attendance based

...

  • on Total Points

...

  • or Points Per Session.

    • Total Points - defined by the total number of points that attendance will be worth for the course. (If Total Points is defined as 100, a student with 2 Presents and 2 Absents will have earned 50 points out of a possible 100),

    • Points Per Session - defined by the total number of points earned for each recorded session (If Points Per Session is defined as 5, a student earns 5 points for every time they are marked Present for a session).

Absence-Based Grading Column

image-20250207-201813.pngImage Added
  • Absence-Based Grading Column is the alternative method for grading attendance and will add or subtract attendance points every time a student is marked absent.

...

    • Use this if you want to

...

    • award or subtract points per absence.

Warning

Select neither option if you do not want to grade attendance

Understanding Attendance Statuses

  • Default Statuses: Quickly offers default statuses such as Present, Absent, Excused, and Tardy.

  • Commentary: Optional commentary can be added for each attendance status.

  • Default "Present" Setting: Students are automatically marked as "Present" upon entering the attendance roster.

  • Impact of Each Status:

    • Absent: Assigns a zero in the points category (color-coded).

    • Excused (Exempted): Excludes the absence from the overall attendance score calculation.

    • Tardy: Can be used to deduct partial points (e.g., entering "50" for a student 30 minutes late to a 60-minute class).

Entering Attendance

  • Accessing the Course Roster: Access the area where you enter attendance and view your course roster.

  • Marking Attendance: Change the status of students who are absent, tardy, or excused (remembering that students are defaulted to "Present").

  • Adding Comments (Optional): Use the comment section to add notes about specific attendance instances.

Grading Options

  • Accessing the Grading Section: Locate the grading section within Quickly's settings.

  • Choosing a Grading Option:

    • Total Points: Creates one column in the Brightspace gradebook that fluctuates based on attendance scores (recommended for weighted gradebooks).

    • Points per Session: Breaks out each session based on a specific point value for that session.

Configuring Absence-Based Grading (Optional)

  • Deducting Points Based on Absences: Set up Quickly to automatically deduct points from the grading column based on the number of absences.

  • Categorizing the Attendance Column: Ensure the attendance column from Quickly is correctly categorized to properly factor into the overall grade calculation.

  • Consulting Resources:
