Preferences

User Sorting

  • Sorting Method:

  • Recommendation: "Last Name" sorting is recommended for consistency with Brightspace course lists.

  • **Alternative Option: **“First Name” sorting is not ideal for most use cases but could be used.

  • **Not Recommended: **“Username” sorting can make managing attendance less intuitive and Usernames in Brightspace are not as easily recognized as the above options.

  • Understanding the Displayed Information: When Show total absences on take attendance screen is checked a number next to each student's name will indicate their number of absences (0 for perfect attendance, 1 for one absence, etc.).

View Preferences for Records
  • View Preferences for Records can be configured according to the requirements of the course and the instructor's preference. Below are the recommended settings intended to work for most users:

  • Round grades to the nearest whole number:

  • Recommendation: Check this option to keep grading attendance simple

  • Show dropped students in record:

  • Recommendation: Uncheck this option to hide dropped students from the roster as their attendance is no longer relevant.

Grading

Session-Based Grading Column

image-20250207-201901.png
  • Session-Based Grading Column is the most straightforward way to add attendance to your Grade Center. Once enabled, you must choose whether to grade attendance based on Total Points or Points Per Session.

    • Total Points - defined by the total number of points that attendance will be worth for the course. (If Total Points is defined as 100, a student with 2 Presents and 2 Absents will have earned 50 points out of a possible 100),

    • Points Per Session - defined by the total number of points earned for each recorded session (If Points Per Session is defined as 5, a student earns 5 points for every time they are marked Present for a session).

Absence-Based Grading Column

image-20250207-201813.png
  • Absence-Based Grading Column is the alternative method for grading attendance and will add or subtract attendance points every time a student is marked absent.

    • Use this if you want to award or subtract points per absence.

Select neither option if you do not want to grade attendance.
