MyOpenMath (MOM) Guide

MyOpenMath is an online course management and assessment system for mathematics and other quantitative fields. MyOpenMath is an invite-only platform: to get an instructor account you will need to provide some information about yourself and prove that you work in education.

MyOpenMath integrates with Brightspace to provide students with a seamless experience. Assessments are delivered within Brightspace, meaning students don’t need to create a separate account or navigate to a secondary website to take advantage of MOM.

Creating a MOM Account

Since MyOpenMath is an invite-only platform, you must request an account. Follow this link to request an instructor account from MOM following these steps:

  1. In the appropriate drop-down boxes select the following information

    1. Institution Type: A College or University

    2. Location: United States or U.S. Territories

    3. State: Maine

    4. ZIP Code: 04937

  2. Click Search

  3. Select Kennebec Valley Community College from the drop-down list

  4. Click Continue

  5. Select Provide a Website in the Method drop-down list

  6. Enter http://www.kvcc.me.edu/about-kvcc/faculty-staff-directory-2/

  7. Click Continue

  8. Provide your details:

    1. Given Name: Your first name

    2. Family Name: Your last name

    3. Email: Your KVCC email address (name@kvcc.me.edu)

    4. Username: Whatever you want to use, for consistency we recommend using the same username you use to log into the MyKVCC Portal

    5. Password: Choose a secure password to use and reenter it when prompted

  9. Check the box agreeing to the Terms of Use

  10. Click Request Account

  11. Keep an eye on your KVCC email over the next 1-3 days, you will eventually get an email confirming your account was created. This email may go to your Other tab in Outlook, or to Junk or Spam, so make sure to check those occasionally

Linking MOM to Brightspace

Now that you’ve got an account and a course created in MyOpenMath, let’s connect it to Brightspace so your students can access it and get grades.

  1. Open the course in MyOpenMath

  2. Click on Export in the left-side menu

  3. Select D2L Brightspace from the Your LMS drop-down list

  4. Click on the Download Export Cartridge and wait for the download to finish

  5. Open the Brightspace course that you’d like to link to

  6. Click on Course Admin

  7. Click on Import / Export / Copy Components in the Site Resources section

  8. Select Import Components at the bottom of the page

  9. Select from a course package

  10. Click the blue Start button

  11. Click the grey Upload button

  12. Find and upload the exported cartridge from Step 4

  13. Select the blue Import All Components button

  14. Wait for the upload and import to complete

    1. The more complex a course is, the longer this process will take. Feel free to take a coffee break here.

  15. When the import is done you will be able to go view it in the course

Grade items are not created during the import process, the grade items will be created when the first student completes each activity.

Finishing the MOM/Brightspace Connection

After completing the cartridge import from the previous steps, head to the Content section of your course. Once there, find and open any External Learning Tool link associated with MOM. After clicking, you’ll be prompted to sign into your MOM account, then prompted to create a course copy in MOM to link to Brightspace. After completing this, your MOM course and Brightspace course will be linked. When students complete items, their grades will be visible in MOM as well as Brightspace.
